Yoshi's Celebrating Anniversaries This Month

I   May is a big month for Yoshi's Jazz Club and Restaurant in Oakland, Calif. This month marks the 35th anniversary the club and restaurant has been in business, and it's also the 10-year anniversary of the restaurant's current location in Jack London Square.

To commemorate the occasion, Yoshi's launched a new website and will release compilation of various performances, Live At Yoshi's: Anniversary Compilation.

The restaurant worked with Concord Records to acquire songs performed by Marian McPartland, Poncho Sanchez, Joe Pass and Joey DeFrancesco. The CD also includes two rare tracks by Madeleine Peyroux and Robben Ford that were recorded by a local radio station during private concerts.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
