Wein Celebrates His Birthday in Style

I   Jazz impresario George Wein won’t celebrate his 82nd birthday on Oct. 3 not by presenting a concert. Rather, he’ll be behind a piano playing some of his favorite tunes at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. This week, Oct. 2-7, he is leading his Newport All-stars for two sets (7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) each night. The group features Wein on piano, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Lew Tabackin on tenor saxophone and flute, Peter Washington on bass, drummer Kenny Washington and guitarist Howard Alden.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
