Vienna Meets New York Festival 2008 Dates Set

I   The Vienna Meets New York Jazz Festival 2008 will feature six evenings of jazz and world music shows Oct. 31 through Nov. 7. The concerts will be held at the Jazz Standard and the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York.

The festival is aimed at providing new opportunities for Austrian jazz musicians through creative collaborations with New York players, as well as celebrating the diverse ethnic contributions to Austrian music. It will also pay tribute to Austrian jazz artist Joe Zawinul, who died last September.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
