As demonstrated by her critically acclaimed discography, the vocalist Tierney Sutton has become a preeminent figure in interpreting the works of jazz giants. In years past, she’s trained her exploratory eye on Bill Evans (2001’s Blue In Green), Frank Sinatra (2004’s Dancing In The Dark) and, most recently, Joni Mitchell (2013’s After Blue).

For her latest album, Sutton and her band return with a unique interpretation of an artist outside the defined margins of jazz but with a rich and diverse repertoire: Sting. The Sting Variations will be available on BFM Records Sept. 9.

Comprising both hits and deep tracks from Sting’s catalog, The Sting Variations is the latest studio album from a group that, in recent years, has headlined at the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Sutton and the band also collaborated on a number of recent movie and television soundtracks, including the Academy Award-nominated film The Cooler and on Clint Eastwood’s new film Sully.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
