Sun Ra Event Invades Knitting Factory

I   NEW YORK—The Sun Ra Impossible Space Circus will headline Sunday at the Knitting Factory in lower Manhattan, playing from Sun Ra's original charts and performing original adaptations and interpretations of the free jazz icon's music.

This is the third presentation of the Space Circus, this time including Sun Ra Arkestra alumni Juini Booth, Dave Davis, Cecil Brooks III and On Ka'a Davis.

Sun Ra was a bizarre composer and pianist who was known for his unconventional compositions and extraterrestrial stage personna. He is credited as a major figure in introducing electronic music to a jazz context.

Tickets to Sunday's show, which begins at 7 p.m., are $11 in advance and $15 at the door. For more details, visit knittingfactory.com.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
