South Carolina Declares Nappy Brown Day

I   South Carolina will honor Nappy Brown with an official state proclamation declaring Feb. 15 as "Nappy Brown Day." Brown will visit Chapin High School in Chapin, S.C., to receive the proclamation and will speak to the students as part of Black History Month.

In the mid-‘50s, Brown had a number of hit singles on the charts, including his signature tune, “Don't Be Angry" and "The Right Time," a song later associated with Ray Charles.

Brown's most recent recording, Long Time Coming, was released on Blind Pig Records last September.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
