Rudresh Mahanthappa Releases Codebook

I   Saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa has released his new disc, Codebook (Pi), which is his follow-up to Mother Tongue from 2004.

The recording features Mahanthappa's working group of pianist Vijay Iyer, bassist Francois Moutin and drummer Dan Weiss. Mahanthappa has said that the music on Codebook stems from ideas related to cryptography. His track, "Play It Again, Sam," is dedicated to Samuel Morse. The inspiration behind his "Decider" is well known to White House observers.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
