(Photo: Courtesy NJPAC)Violinist Regina Carter will helm the upcoming all-female jazz residency, hosted by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, which is set to run July 8-14.
Open to young women ages 14-25, the week-long overnight residency includes master classes conducted by Kenny Barron, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tia Fuller and Stefon Harris, among others. Faculty will include Sylvia Cuenca, Tanya Darby, Mark Gross, Connaitre Miller and Bruce Williams, as well as a handful of other educators.
“This is a proud moment,” said Carter, who follows the late Geri Allen in the position. “It’s a rare opportunity to nurture a community and build confidence in young women of jazz who are embarking on careers in the industry or considering their options. They’ll hear straight talk—and learn in the best possible ways—from first-in-class professionals I’m also grateful to call colleagues and collaborators.”
The fifth annual residency is a partnership between NJPAC and the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers-Newark and aims at developing student’s instrumental and vocal skills through ensemble work while also offering panels and classes on improvisation, theory and more.
