Ornette Opens UCLA Jazz Series

I   Saxophonist Ornette Coleman will kick off the 2007-'08 UCLA Live jazz series at the school's Royce Hall on Sept. 26.

The 77-year-old jazz icon and his quintet will perform new music and work from his latest Grammy-nominated album, Sound Grammar. Earlier this year, the disc took Jazz Album of the Year honors in DownBeat's Critics Poll, and Coleman also picked up awards for Jazz Artist of the Year and Alto Saxophonist of the Year.

UCLA's concert series continues throughout the academic year with several top names in jazz, including Terence Blanchard on Jan. 18, 2008; Keith Jarrett and his trio on March 5, 2008; and vocalist Dianne Reeves on May 22, 2008.

For more information on the series and to purchase tickets, call (310) 825-2101 or visit uclalive.org.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
