New School Jazz Presents Miles and Miles Series

I   This spring, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music’s annual Jazz Presents series will explore the music of the trumpeter Miles Davis. Two concerts will pay tribute to the artistry of the musician. The first concert, March 6, focuses on work from his electric era, and feature Davis’s band member and music director Adam Holzman and guest Vernon Reid of Living Color.

The second concert, April 3, will interpret music from Davis’s early period, and feature drummer Jimmy Cobb, who performed with Davis on Kind Of Blue, as well as keyboardist Sam Yahel.

Jazz Presents is an annual series at the New School that showcases the work of New School Jazz faculty in collaboration with New School Jazz alumni and students.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
