Monterey Jazz Festival To Honor Dave Brubeck With Legends Award

I   The Monterey Jazz Festival will launch its 50th anniversary by honoring pianist and composer Dave Brubeck with the MJF Legends Award at its Golden Gala Celebration on April 7 at the Tehama Golf Club in Carmel, Calif.

"Dave Brubeck is one of the reasons that the Monterey Jazz Festival exists," said Tim Jackson, general manager of the festival. "This award acknowledges the gratitude that the festival and jazz fans from around the world feel for a man who has transcended the boundaries of what we expect a musician to be."

The celebration features dinner, a live auction and entertainment, with proceeds going to the festival’s youth jazz education programs.

Monterey’s mayor, Chuck Della Salla, has also announced that the week of April 8 will be Dave Brubeck week.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
