Martial Solal To Celebrate 80th With Vanguard Run

I   French pianist Martial Solal turned 80 last month, and he'll celebrate the occasion with a solo piano week at the Village Vanguard in New York. The residency will run Oct. 9-14.

Solal is considered one of Europe's finest jazz musicians, though he remains an obscure figure in the United States. This will only be his fifth appearance in New York despite a career spanning four decades.

Solal’s record label, CAM, will be recording his solo performances for a future Live at the Village Vanguard release. To purchase tickets, visit villagevanguard.com.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
