Manhattan Center Donates Studio Space For Tribute Disc

I   Manhanttan Center Studios donated its facilities to record a fundraising tribute disc for the family of the late journalist and jazz musician Tom Masland.

Pianist Rodney Kendrick performs his own compositions, like “It’s All About The Groove” and such standards as “Nature Boy” on the disc. He also co-produced the project and enlisted the help of trumpeter Roy Hargrove, saxophonist Don Walden, vocalist Frank Senior and other musicians.

“One thing champions have in common in this world is their search for the truth,” Kendrick said. “We wanted to honor that strength and character in Tom.”

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
