(Photo: Frank Stewart)Blue Engine Records has released The Jungle, the fourth symphony by Wynton Marsalis, on all major streaming platforms.
Featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) conducted by Nicholas Buc, The Jungle was recorded live at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, Australia, in 2019. The piece itself consists of six movements, and the album closes with a bonus track of the concert’s curtain-call romp through the Duke Ellington standard “C Jam Blues.”
The Jungle will be part of the JLCO with Wynton Marsalis’ repertoire throughout the ensemble’s 2023 European tour (June 7–July 9), which includes 23 shows in 16 cities and eight countries.
“New York City is the most fluid, pressure-packed and cosmopolitan metropolis the modern world has ever seen,” says Marsalis, whose masterwork highlights the paradoxes that define life in the Big Apple, where wealth and poverty, grit and romance, and unlimited growth and stagnation all coexist. But it’s also a meditation on what being human means today — a wide-scale attempt to understand the maelstrom of modern life and remind us what brings us together.
The JLCO with Wynton Marsalis will reunite with MSO at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on Aug. 25–26.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
