Kareem Abdul-Jabbar To Talk Jazz In New York

I   Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabar will talk about his sport's relation to jazz at the Museum Of The City Of New York on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6:30. The free talk, which is part of the Harlem Speak series, includes bassist Christian McBride and critic Larry Blumenfeld interviewing the on-court giant.

"We want to show how hip-hop, which kind of fuels today's basketball stars, is directly related to jazz," Abdul-Jabar said. "When we show that connection, we find that things haven't changed at all."

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
