In a profound improvisational act, Jazz At Lincoln Center is set to host its annual gala online. Streaming from its website, as well as on Facebook, YouTube and Livestream, the “Worldwide Concert for Our Culture” is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The program’s lineup includes performers from across the globe, all contributing remotely. And with representatives from France, Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa and the States, the evening’s likely to be as broad and all-encompassing as International Jazz Day. Along with the performances, JALC will honor Board Member Clarence Otis and his wife Jacqueline L. Bradley with the Ed Bradley Award for Leadership in Jazz. The organization also plans to give Phil Schaap, JALC’s curator, the Jazz At Lincoln Center Award for Artistic Excellence. The event comes as musicians—and people across the world—still are struggling to figure out what normal looks like amid the coronavirus pandemic. But JALC clearly has been at the vanguard, promoting educational videos, hosting live chats with Wynton Marsalis and posting scads of archival material for fans to peruse. A full list of performers and the compositions they’re set to play is below. But for additional information about the event, visit the JLC website. DB

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”

Camille Thurman took to the stage alongside bassist Kenny Davis and drummer Tommy Campbell for a rendition of Johnny Mercer’s “I’m An Old Cowhand” that recalled Rollins’ epochal 1957 trio outing Way Out West.
