The season kicks off with a 60th birthday party for Jazz at Lincoln Center co-founder, bandleader and guiding light Wynton Marsalis. Billed as Wynton At 60, the three-night presentation takes place Nov. 18–20 and will feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in a retrospective of the trumpeter’s four-decade career. Marsalis is expected to draw upon repertoire from his various groups, large and small, highlighting his compositions, arrangements and musicianship.
The band celebrates the season with Big Band Holidays Dec. 15–19, playing their own swinging arrangements of holiday classics. In January, the band pays tribute to Chick Corea in a concert directed by his long-time bandmate John Patitucci that will feature guest appearances by various Corea collaborators from over the years.
Jazz at Lincoln Center events scheduled to take place in 2022 include NEA Jazz Master Dianne Reeves offering a Valentine’s Day weekend set called Let’s Fall In Love; a February blues tribute to the Voices of Mississippi; a tribute to Charle Mingus at 100 in April; a pair of performances in May by Cécile McLorin Salvant; a world premiere of the Latin-infused Monk con Clave in May; and saxophonist Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Quartet reimagining the music of Burt Bacharach in June. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
