Historic Harlem Theater Gets a Developer

I   New York officials have selected Danforth Development Partners to redevelop the vacant Victoria Theater on 125th Street in New York. Danforth plans to transform the Victoria into a cultural center, with space for the Jazz Museum of Harlem, along with a hotel and 91 condominium apartments. The space will include a Classical Theater of Harlem and a theater for the Harlem Arts Alliance.

The selection of Danforth follows a three-year process, much of which involved getting reassurances from the developer that the project would include minority subcontractors, jobs for Harlem residents and housing for low- and moderate-income tenants.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
