Henry Threadgill To Release New Disc

I   Henry Threadgill will release This Brings Us To (Pi) on Oct. 27. The disc will be the saxophonist's first in eight years.

Threadgill's group, Zooid, is named after a cell that can move independently of its host organism. He also uses this spirit for the group's musical language: Threadgill's compositions are based along a series of three-note intervals and each musician is free to improvise their own melodies based on these assigned intervals.

Along with Threadgill on alto saxophone and flute, Zooid consists of guitarist Liberty Ellman, trombonist/tubaist Jose Davila, bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Elliot Kavee.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
