DownBeat Apple Music Playlist: 25 for the Future

I   Our July 2016 issue featured a series of short profiles on 25 musicians who we think will shape the direction of jazz in the decades to come.

Those artists, all under the age of 40, are represented here through their music. Some are already established leaders; others are integral accompanists to the biggest names in the business. But if we’re right about where these artists are heading, you’re bound to hear much, much more.

Welcome to the future of jazz.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
