The Detroit Jazz Festival, set to run Labor Day weekend, announced its 2020 lineup Monday.

“True to our mission, the Detroit Jazz Festival provides a platform for emerging and legacy artists to present true jazz presentations to enthusiasts and fans across the world ... this year is no exception,” festival President and Artistic Director Chris Collins wrote in an email. “This year’s festival will showcase a very dynamic group of artists from various disciplines and generations, representing our embedded mission to present multiple facets of jazz in one festival setting.”

Dee Dee Bridgewater is this year’s artist-in-residence, and is scheduled to perform several times during the weekend. Also slated to play are Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Gregory Porter, Anat Cohen Tentet and Alicia Olatuja, among others. DB

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
