Coinciding with the event will be a residency by organist Cory Henry March 5-9. The Deep Dish Music Festival counts performers from Chicago-area high schools, focusing on popular music, as well as jazz.
The day begins with student performances and clinics headed by Columbia faculty adjudicators. Each school’s band also will attend a presentation in the digitally equipped 21st-century music lab. Naturally, deep dish pizza will be served for lunch. The afternoon concludes with a workshop presented by Henry, as well as his performance with the college’s Fusion Ensemble.
Trumpeter Russell Gunn will be in residency March 12-18 at the school and also will be performing with The Columbia College Jazz Ensemble at Chicago’s Jazz Showcase March 15-18, mixing r&b, soul, hip-hop and jazz. Expect more than just a few vocal features.
