Chicago Hosts Latin Jazz Festival

I   Chicago will play host to an evening of free outdoor Latin jazz at the JazzCity Latin Jazz Festival on Friday.

Performing in the heart of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community at the open-air boathouse in Humboldt Park, the three bands taking the stage include the Afro-Cuban sounds of Richie Pillot’s Havana, the traditional Latin jazz of Conjunto and Darwin Noguera’s Evolution Trio, a group that brings contemporary jazz into Latin forms.

The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and is part of the city's annual JazzCity series sponsored by the Chicago Park District and the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
