Caramoor Concert To Feature 'Conversations With Cachao'

I   The Caramoor International Music Festival in Katonah, N.Y., will present the world premiere of Conversations With Cachao, a Paquito D'Rivera composition commissioned for the festival, at a June 30 concert event.

D'Rivera, composer-in-residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and Arts, drew inspiration for the piece from the music of legendary Cuban musician Israel "Cachao" Lopez. The piece is a concerto for contrabass, clarinet/alto saxophone and sympony orchestra.

The performance will be staged as part of the first annual Caramoor Cavalcade, an all-day music event held throughout the grounds of the Caramoor estate. The concerts begin at 1 p.m., and tickets are $15-67.50.

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
