Drummer Andrew Cyrille and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, along with six other artists in the dance and theater worlds, have been given the 2020 Doris Duke Artist Award, the nonprofit announced on Sept. 17.

The honor comes with a gift of $275,000, a portion of which is earmarked for retirement. The nonprofit this year also increased the number of awards it dispensed—usually six artists are recognized—to help offset lost income resulting from the pandemic.

In 2019, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and trombonist George Lewis were among the honorees. DB

“It was just that suddenly … I could hear it,” Ravi Coltrane said of an epiphany he experienced during his late teens regarding his father’s music. “And it was almost like a calling, like something saying, ‘Hey, man, come on. It’s time to get serious.’ And the first time you really tune in and dial in and focus like that, it can be very life-changing.”
